Here is my submission for So You Think You Can Decorate Week 4! The theme was "white." I honestly feel so honored that I'm still in the competition. All of these ladies are amazing! Please go vote!
Paint it White!
Our kitchen table was passed down from my parents. I spent many years with my crafts spread across this table as a child, and since I was three or four, I've thought of it as "mine." So when I got married, I was more than happy to claim it as my own. However, the 1980's oak just wasn't working for me. I stained the top a Red Mahogany, but that didn't fit either (so I never stained the bottom).
The sideboard is a Craig's List find that I got for $50. It's a 1930's piece that had been sitting in a basement for 20 years. I was excited to transform it's "good bones" into a beautiful dining room piece.

The sideboard is functioning as our bar table.
This simple transformation has taken my dining room out of the 1980's, and using crisp, clean, whites has added cottage charm, and a modern, yet timeless look. My entire dining set only cost me $50 plus $20 in paint supplies.
I used Valspar's Honeymilk, Minwax Dark Walnut stain, & Polycrylic Satin finish.

I like the mix of the stain and paint finishes! It is a very elegant look. The 80s are definitely gone!!

ReplyDeleteWow, those look awesome! I have almost exactly that same kitchen table and was planning a VERY similar transformation. Can I ask how you treated the pedestal? Manual sanding, liquid sander/deglosser or just bonding primer? Looks like it came out very smooth. I had actually planned to paint the top dark brown but you've inspired me to maybe try to stain it. I'd appreciate any tips/tricks/caveats, etc you've got since I'll be starting my transformation in a few days after finishing up the other projects in the works!
ReplyDeleteIt looks great. I see a lot of those round tables on craigslist for really cheap! Just shows you what a little paint/stain can do. Great job.

I voted for you on sytycd! So...can you give me any tips on the pedastal as well as the top? Yours looks so professional and smooth. Can you do a tutorial on it? :)

ReplyDeleteVery beautiful. My sister had used this type of treatment on her bedroom set...we received them a while back, but she had recovered them with paint. I want to bring her former finishes back. Your post gave has given me the inspiration to follow through. So very beautiful. Great job.

ReplyDeleteThat honeymilk color is what I chose when we painted our new house this past summer. Most of my walls right now are that beautiful, slightly yellow/cream color. Your table turned out absolutely beautiful. Great job.

I love this table! It is just like the hideous one that I have in my dining room and wanted to leave on the other side of the country before we moved last summer and literally couldn't even give away on Craigslist. I have been intent on making it better since moving it with us, and I love your fix! My table was a hand-me-down as well and symbolizes our inability to afford the things we really want...but if I can make mine half as beautiful as yours, I think it will be a reminder more of how I love living my life. I just stumbled upon your blog while searching for fixes for my table, and you are so cool! I wish you lived in New England because I would love to be your friend!

Wow! This is truly beautiful!! I bought a great table and china cabinet that I want to do this exact thing to, but need a little direction! For the pedestal, did you sand it then paint it? Did you use any wood conditioning for the pedestal or the table top? If you sanded, did you use a power or hand sander? What grit paper? How many coats of stain and paint were needed?
