Pick Our Next Project: No More Sleeping on the Floor

We have been sleeping on a mattress on the floor for a year now. And I have decided that a year is long enough. So hopefully, we will remedy this situation over the holiday break. Between all of the gift-making, wrapping, traveling, baking, and spending time with family...well, we'll see.

But first things first, we have to decide what bed...and I want your help.

Since building a daybed, (ok, ok, I supervised building the daybed. I'm still afraid of the miter saw. But I'm pretty good at using an electric screwdriver, filling holes, sanding, and painting). I have been itching to try another DIY building project. So this seems like the perfect opportunity, since we are bed-less and all.

Option One: The Arched Bed

This is option one....except, instead of black, I would probably finish it something like this one...

Oooh...so pretty.
And in case you are wondering, here is how you build it (thanks to Ana White @ Knock Off Wood!)

Option Two: The Farmhouse Bed

This bed is inspired by Pottery Barn - it's so classic and beautiful. Here is how to make it in a King-size.

Option Three: No Building, Just Painting
Our third option was inspired by The Lettered Cottage and their new bed:

Except, without the dog of course (pregnancy hormones are making me slightly crazy, and David is trying to keep me sane and dog-less. Which rationally, I know is definitely the best move. "but wouldn't a Golden Retriever puppy be so cute under the Christmas tree.....")

Ok, back to the bed. Available at JCPenny  & with a little spray paint, of course.

Three very different looks. Price-wise, they are all in a similar range.
And in case you are wondering, this is the bedding that we have.

It's Guru Paisley from Anthropologie.

So, what are your thoughts and opinions?!

  1. I like the farmhouse bed the best, but with your bedding, I'd go with the arched bed. I think it would look great!

  5. arched bed. if you have that space, why not?! plus, i think it plays off the swirliness of your comforter set.

  6. The arched bed!! If you enjoy reading in bed at all I would stay away from any metal headboard.

I personally have an antique metal bed that is very cute, but it is awful for sitting up and reading. You need a million pillows to keep the bars from pressing into your back and even then they mush through the bars.

  7. Honestly I love all three and can see why you're having a hard time choosing! If it were me, I'd probably go with the iron bed just because there is NO way we could get a project like building a bed done right now in the dead of winter.

  8. I like all three! Hmm... that's a tough decision. But the farmhouse bed is my fave!

  9. I think the arched bed goes best with your bedding, but bedding can change! In which case - I'd take the big white one.
As for the puppy - we had a son in April '09 and got a puppy in Aug. '09. They are great friends, but my goodness things were difficult for awhile! If I had it to do again, I would've waited until my son was 1 before getting the puppy!

  10. i love the arched bed- it is dramatic, and i love that dark wood finish- it will contrast your bedding nicely and the whole shebang will make a statement!

  13. I love all three. Can I ask what your bedroom plans are or what other furniture you have for the room? If you don't have what you want, do you have any other ideas? All three are cute. I like the iron one the best, but I think it looks like it's more modern if you're going for something different. Second choice is the farmhouse bed.

  14. Tough choice! At first I would have said farmhouse, but after I saw your bedding I think I'd vote for Option #1 (arched). Looks like it could be a fun project!

  21. I'm usually partial to the farmhouse bed look. Although I really loved the photos you provided of the arched bed. A lot more unique than the farmhouse bed and yet gives a similar feel.
How fun to be decorating your room! I need to do that too! Why is it that we leave our own room for last??
    ha.

  23. Oh, I love that arched bed so much, but lately I've been wanting a brass headboard. I'd have to go with the Penney's version!
